Tesla Announces First Upstate NY Showroom in Deal with Oneida Indian Nation

story from New York Upstate shared the news that car company Tesla had struck an agreement to build a new Tesla showroom in Upstate New York, with the completion of construction and subsequent opening scheduled for 2025.

The showroom will live just off the New York Thruway at Exit 34, near Canastota in Madison County.

The 25,000-square-foot facility, which will house both sales and service operations, sits on a piece of land owned by the Oneida Indian Nation. An agreement reached back in 2013 between the Oneidas and New York State allowed the community to pursue responsible land use and economic development initiatives without (state) interference.

Because of this, the Oneidas were able to independently strike a deal with Tesla to bring a showroom to Upstate New York. The construction and subsequent operation of the showroom is expected to open up a yet-to-be-determined number of jobs for members of the community.

Not only that, but New York Upstate also asserts that Tesla's commitment to manufacturing electronic cars also matched the Oneidas' on-going commitment to preserving the environment.

A previous agreement with the state had also been reached regarding the distribution of tax dollars, and specifically, who would be receiving Tesla's money. The report states that all money earmarked for the State of New York will instead be sent to the Oneida Indian Nation.

In turn, the Oneidas will pay the money back to the state government through the execution of state-operated programs, like healthcare.

In the short-term, Tesla will begin to ship their cars directly to Upstate, via the parking garage at Turning Stone Resort Casino. Cars will be shipped to the casino, and will be available for pick-up through the duration of the showroom's construction.

It's a ground-breaking development in Upstate New York, but is also another example of a major corporation setting up shop north of New York City. That's a trend that is sure to continue in the coming years.
