Capaccio: Wednesday was a ‘Historic Day in Buffalo Bills’ Franchise History’

Wednesday was a landmark day for the Buffalo Bills, and likely, one that fans won't forget anytime soon.

The team made major changes to their roster over a 48-hour span. They released six players in total, some of whom had been with the team for most, or all, of their respective careers.

The moves were made in order to free up salary cap space, as Buffalo entered the offseason as the team with the least amount of cap space in the National Football League.

For some context on that, the Bills opened up $25.96 million with the moves made yesterday, per ESPN. They entered the day $40 million over the cap, meaning that they still need to cut an additional $15 million (and change) in salary in order to get back to the league's cap number.

As the Bills attempt to shed salary, they also have to prepare to sign new players, as the NFL's free agency period opens in less than a week.

Regardless of the financial implications, Wednesday was a sad day for fans of the Buffalo Bills. Both Jordan Poyer and Mitch Morse were captains for the Bills, while Tre'Davious White was the first draft pick made by the team once Sean McDermott was named head coach.

ESPN notes that Poyer, and his safety partner Micah Hyde, started the most games together at that position since 2017 (92) in the entire league. That information was provided via the Elias Sports Bureau.

That statistic perfectly underscores the severity of these moves: the Bills released quality players, and now, must find a way to replace their production in their lineup before Week 1 rolls around.
