Three cities in New York State have made the list of places with the highest murder rates. 24/7 Wall St. compiled the list. The cities on the list might surprise you. 24/7 Wall St. used homicide data from this year along with population 2020 data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

We considered all U.S. cities with populations of at least 250,000 as well as cities with smaller populations and an average of at least 10 homicides a year between 2015 and 2019. Only cities with publicly available homicide data were considered.

These three cities in New York State made the list:

While Syracuse did make the list, it was the last city on it, meaning it has fewer homicides than the other two.

I'm not sure what's happening in Rochester this year, but New York's third largest city is taking the lead when it comes to violent deaths. The Bronx in New York City generally leads the pack, followed by Buffalo, which is the second largest city in the state. But Rochester has been taking the lead this year. It also ranks number one in New York for gun violence outside of New York City.

I guess the good news, if there's any is that only three New York cities made the list of the top 45 and none were number one. That honor went to a city that is very familiar with being called 'the murder capital'.
