Illegal Immigrants Arrested By ICE Being Released In New York
Some illegal immigrants in New York are not being deported. Trump instructed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to aggressively seek out and deport illegal immigrants at the beginning of his term. He has even set his sights on immigrants here legally. Trump has revoked the legal status of more than 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans, who were granted status under a humanitarian parole program. Migrants in the program were required to have a sponsor, undergo vetting and get vaccinations.

According to NBC News, not all undocumented immigrants are being deported. More than 8,000 immigrants have been arrested by federal ICE agents since Trump took office, but some of those have been released back into New York. The issue is that the high number of arrests means space is needed to detain them, but it isn't available. Federal courts have ruled that the U.S. government cannot detain illegal immigrants for an indefinite amount of time. In addition, some immigrant's home countries refuse to take them back.
Five sources confirmed to NBC that illegal immigrants have been released with monitoring due to these factors. An ICE spokesperson told NBC,
“The agency’s federal law enforcement officers do everything they can to keep our communities safe. In some cases, ICE is required to release certain arrested aliens from custody.”
