Once again the Roots’ annual pre-summer music festival delivered another diverse and entertaining lineup at Philadelphia’s Penn's Landing on Saturday (May 30). Co-headliners Erykah Badu and the Weekend rocked the Philly crowd with their soulful and energetic sets.

According to Philly.com, the Illadelph band backed Ms. Badu as she took the crowd through her musical journey of R&B and hip-hop. Donning a shaggy Afro, a long robe, and some huge, spaced-out sunglasses, the R&B songbird performed such classic tunes as “On and On,” “Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop),” “Window Seat,” “Bag Lady,” among others.

Badu’s set was also full of surprises as well. Philadelphia rhymer Freeway made a cameo onstage to perform "Roc the Mick and New York’s own the Lox rapped “All About the Benjamins.” Bompton rapper YG brought the west coast onstage with him and performed a quick rendition of “My N----s.”

Prior to Badu, the Weeknd graced the stage to give fans a sensuous set that was hotter than the day's afternoon temperature. The Toronto crooner’s melted the female concertgoers’ hearts with his soft falsetto and charm.

According to Philly.com, the Weeknd’s erotic coos and sexualized themes seemed “mildly inappropriate when the sun hadn't even gone down yet.” Nevertheless, the crowd didn’t mind it as they joyously sang along to his seductive ballads like “The Hills."

The 8th annual Roots Picnic also brought a diverse mix of R&B and hip-hop acts to Philadelphia including Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Mustard, Raury, Rae Sremmurd, Phantogram, Bishop Nehru and A$AP Rocky who performed songs from his just-released At. Long. Last. A$AP album.
