Demo of Schenectady Office Building May Become 5-Story Apartment Complex

There are a lot of vacant and old office buildings in Schenectady. Another developer wants to demolish one and build more housing for the city of Schenectady. This time near Schenectady police headquarters.

What is Being Planned?

The Rosenblum Group wants to demolish a small office building that stands at 31 Lafayette Street just across the street from police headquarters. The hope is to build a five-story apartment complex apartment house. There would be a forty-six-unit building with not only apartments but an indoor parking area and a rooftop terrace according to the Daily Gazette.

The new apartment complex will be called The Lafayette to honor the street in which it resides.

What Was in that Building Before?

In the past, the building at Lafayette and Liberty once held a printing company and an advertising agency. It was built in 1981.

What Happens Next?

The proposal will go in front of the Schenectady Planning Commission on April 20th and then the board will vote on a $150,000 grand in a May meeting. If all is approved, the twenty-two thousand four hundred sixty-one square-foot building would be demolished.

The is a lot of development happening in downtown Schenectady. A lot of historic buildings are being repurposed into apartments, restaurants, and more. The Wedgeway Building and the Schenectady Blockhouse will be gutted and made into apartments, restaurants, and retail spaces.
