The late Erica Garner was remembered on Monday (Jan. 8) in Harlem at a memorial attended by hundreds, including Common.

Garner, the daughter of the late Eric Garner, died in December as a result of complications from asthma, which turned into a heart-attack. She was 27 years old. Also in attendance for her funeral where Black Lives Matter supporters, city officials and Rev. Al Sharpton, who delivered a eulogy.

According to Billboard, Common —a strong supporter for social justice—took a cross-country flight just to be in attendance. The rapper also spoke about Erica, saying the first time he met her he was touched by her spirit.

“We’re going to fight, and keep fighting, not only for the injustices, but for the positivity and the grace and the gifts that we’ve been given from God,” said Common. “We’re gonna keep fighting for those things, that always will be there for us, and we’ll keep fighting for our young people.”

Senator Bernie Sanders also sent in a letter to the memorial which read: “Getting to know Erica was one of the great honors of my campaign. Erica never asked to be an activist, but responded to her own personal tragedy by becoming a fierce fighter for criminal justice reform and an end to police brutality.”

Mike Brown Sr., the father of the late Mike Brown, also attended the funeral, saying he wanted to show support for the Garner family which has been there with his family from day one.
