All this time I thought it was chlorine that causes your eyes to turn red after a long day of swimming. Apparently all this time we have been wrong. According to an article over at Times Union, It is urine not chlorine that give you a nice pair of swimmers eyes.

“When we go swimming and we complain that our eyes are red, it’s because swimmers have peed in the water,” the CDC staffers told the morning news program. “The nitrogen in the urine combines with the chlorine and it forms what’s known as chloramine and it’s actually chloramine that causes the red eyes. It’s chlorine mixed with poop and sweat and a lot of other things we bring into the water with us.”

I guess this answers the age old question do you pee in the pool ? It looks like everyone is peeing in the pool if its enough to give you red eyes. Enjoy the rest of your summer !
