The Weeknd was the big winner at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards as he took home an impressive eight trophies, including Top R&B Artist and Top R&B album for Beauty Behind the Madness.

Sadly, the singer didn’t perform at the event, which took place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday night (May 22). However, the 26-year-old singer won the first award of the night -- Top Hot 100 Artist -- and he dedicated the honor to the late music icon Prince.

The Weeknd recalled his most cherished moment at the 2015 American Music Awards last November, when Prince presented him with the trophy for Best Soul/R&B album.

“It was the greatest experience of my entire life,” he said after accepting his honor. “I didn’t know him, but he was very close to me, and he will always be an inspiration and help me push the envelope.”

Later that night, a jubilant Weeknd went on his Twitter account to celebrate his eight wins but, unfortunately, made a slight blunder in the process.

"XO we took home 8! more than any male artist in history. Thank you @billboard," he tweeted.

Actually, he's wrong. Usher still holds the record of taking home 14 honors at the 2004 Billboard Music Awards. That was the year when Usher released his seminal album, Confessions, which became his first Diamond album for selling 10 million copies.

The Weeknd realized his mistake and corrected his gaffe with an apologetic tweet. Read it below.
