The world lost a true icon today (April 21). The man known as Prince, who changed music forever when he first hit the scene in the mid 1970s, sporting an electric style the world had yet to witness, has passed away at 57. His body was discovered at his home, the Paisley Park compound, in Minnesota.

Carver County Chief Deputy Jason Kamerud confirmed a response to an emergency call at 9:43 a.m. this morning. His publicist validated the news by issuing a statement that the singer had passed. "Pop music superstar Prince has died at his home in suburban Minneapolis," read a quote given to The Associated Press.

Following the release of his breakout album 1999, released in 1982, the international superstar who went by a mononym served as a major influence in popular music for the past three decades and went on to sell over 100 million albums. Prince was recording and touring right up until his death, releasing four albums in the past 18 months. However, the icon recently cancelled two shows due to health concerns. He had been battling the flu for a few weeks. On April 15, his plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Moline, Ill. He was taken to the hospital, treated and released. He went on to perform the next day.

As you can imagine, the hip-hop community had a ton of emotions flowing. Check out what everyone had to say.
