In an effort to stop the sale of a personal items that she and 2Pac owned together, Madonna has shared details about the 1995 breakup prison letter he wrote to her in a new affidavit.

The New York Daily News reports that in court documents, the 59-year-old pop icon stated that she remembered receiving the 1995 letter after Tupac Shakur told her in a phone call from jail that he would be sending a missive. For those who don’t know, ‘Pac and Madge dated briefly in the ’90s.

In the letter, 2Pac revealed that he broke up with Madonna because she was white and it would affect his career. “For you to be seen with a black man wouldn’t in any way jeopardize your career, if anything it would make you seem that much more open and exciting,” he wrote. “But for me at least in my previous perception I felt due to my ‘image’ I would be letting down all of the people who made me what I thought I was. I never meant to hurt you.”

In her affidavit, Madonna wrote, “My recollection is that he had one of his friends hand deliver the letter to my home in Manhattan. I also have a specific memory of reading the letter. In particular, I remember that he apologized to me. I never gave this letter away. It is intensely personal.”

Madonna maintains that that a former friend, Darlene Lutz, stole many of the items that were up for bidding at but has since been removed. Among the items listed for sale included photos, a checkbook and a pair of worn panties.

Lutz has denied Madonna’s claims in a deposition and says the singer never read her fan mail because she had no interest in her legions of followers. “Madonna didn’t handle her fan mail. She didn’t care,” said Lutz said in a Sept. 27 deposition with Madonna’s lawyer Brendan O’Rourke.

A judge has yet to make a decision in the ongoing case. Reps for both parties had no comment on the matter.
