Lupe Fiasco Fires Back at Those Who Don’t Like His ‘Black Panther’ Movie Criticisms

Last week, Lupe Fiasco used his Instagram account to make known his opinion of Marvel Studios' latest historically successful superhero film, Black Panther. In the hours that followed, some Twitter users—and websites like The Grio and Blavity—directed their attention toward the remark. For their part, The Grio suggested Lupe was just being a hater.

Today (March 22), Fiasco stood by his remarks during a session of Instagram Live. During the session, which was still going strong at the time of this writing, Lupe let loose bits and pieces of his alleged history with BET while telling the world his idea of why people are mad at his comments.

"Look at the comments for the article that you put up, and this is for Blavity and The Grio," Lupe said during his Instagram Live session today. "Nobody fucking agreed with you," he continued, spotlighting the fact that some Twitter users disagreed with pieces posted by the sites.

Elsewhere in Lupe's de facto press conference, he explains the idea that, outside of his previous claim that Barack Obama was a terrorist, no one cares about his political opinion. He had a lot to say on that.

Fiasco's original remarks suggested that Black Panther was, perhaps, an overrated flick, and he eventually gave the movie an A-minus rating. The Grio wasn't having it, though. Their headline for the piece criticizing Fiasco reads, "Watching Lupe Fiasco trash ‘Black Panther’ proves his cookout invite is revoked." Having your "cookout invitation" revoked is a euphemism that indicates that you've essentially lost some of your credibility as a Black person.

For their part, BET also reported on Fiasco's comments, though they didn't editorialize as heavily as the other sites. They using their headline to indicate that a lot of people wouldn't be so happy with what he had to say.

During his original critique of the film, the soundtrack for which Kendrick Lamar produced, Lupe gave props to the Black Panther cast while explaining that actors like Denzel Washington, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino define his standard of acting excellence. Ultimately, though, Lupe claimed that the film, which has grossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, fell short of being outstanding.

“So [Black Panther] still falls in the category of being an okay film,” Lupe said during his Instagram Live-hosted original review. “I don’t think that the acting was like super amazing. Because one, I don’t think we’re used to seeing Black people on screen that much, and so when you do see a movie that’s all Black folks, this for me specifically, there’s a bias.”

In other parts of the original review, Lupe suggests that Black people are biased toward Black Panther because of its perceived cultural impact.
