Update (Sept. 18, 3:17 p.m. EST):

"1-800-273-8255" is now No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated Sept. 30, making it Alessia Cara's highest-charting Hot 100 entry and the highest slot a phone number has ever gotten on the chart.

Original Story:

Logic may be one of hip-hop’s biggest stars, but the Maryland rapper has never had a top 10 hit song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart until today. On Tuesday (Sept. 5), Logic’s “1-800-273-8255” collaboration moved all the way from No. 29 to No. 9 on the Billboard chart.

The 27-year-old rapper has flirted with the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the past when he was featured on the Suicide Squad song “Sucker for Pain.” Released in 2016, the track, which features Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Imagine Dragons and X Ambassadors, made it to No. 15 on the chart.

2017 has been a big year for Logic. The artist’s third studio album, Everybody, was certified gold in August and “1-800-273-8255” has become an anthem for many. After performing the hit song at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline saw a 50 percent increase in phone calls.

John Draper, director of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, praised the song, saying it’s not only about the phone calls but about increasing awareness. “The calls don’t even begin to count the number of people who, just by listening to the song and hearing the lyrics, feel more hopeful and less alone,” he told CNN. “There’s really no measuring that impact.”

Draper added, “But here’s what’s really important: Logic is generating calls with a song about getting help and finding hope. It’s not focusing on tragedy or suicide. In fact, he’s starting conversations about suicide prevention, as opposed to suicide.”
