Eight time Grammy winner Lauryn Hill could be facing up to 3 years in prison after pleading guilty two days ago to evading federal taxes in the U.S. District court of Newark, NJ.

After being charged 3 weeks ago with 3 counts of failing to pay her taxes in 2005-2007 on more than 1.5million she earned from recording and film royalties, Lauryn stood in court and plead guilty to all three counts. Each count against Hill faces up to a one year sentencing, meaning the 37 year old mother of 6 (5 of which are by legend Bob Marley's son Rohan Marley) could be facing up to 3 years in prison (ugh say it ain't so Lauryn).

The day after the charges became public, Lauryn took to her Tumblr to explain why she failed to do her taxes. Lauryn stated that she withdrew herself and her family from the public eye to distance them from a lifestyle that required 'extortion and compromise as a means for maintaining it'. Ms. Hill also wrote:

“For the past several years, I have remained what others would consider underground,I did this in order to build a community of people, like-minded in their desire for freedom and the right to pursue their goals and lives without being manipulated and controlled by a media protected military industrial complex with a completely different agenda.

Obviously, the danger I faced was not accepted as reasonable grounds for deferring my tax payments, as authorities, who despite being told all of this, still chose to pursue action against me, as opposed to finding an alternative solution. My intention has always been to get this situation rectified.”

The judge delayed the hip hop legend's sentencing hearing to November to give Hill time to make payments. After pleading guilty Lauryn was released on $150,000 bail.
