Kanye West, Jay Z and Vic Mensa Albums Get the Latest Marvel Variant Treatment
The latest batch of hip-hop album covers to receive a Marvel variant is out with releases from Kanye West, Jay Z and Vic Mensa all getting the superhero treatment. As seen above, Kanye’s The Life of Pablo cover is re-imagined with Captain Marvel, specifically with Carol Danvers or Ms. Marvel, in mind. Below meanwhile, Jay Z’s shadowy figure on the cover of American Gangster is replaced by a sai-wielding Elektra the title reading “Ninaja Assassin,” while Vic Mensa’s There’s Alot Going On becomes There’s A Lot Being Thrown, with Bullseye standing in for the rapper.
The hip-hop variants have come in waves throughout the year, Dr. Dre, Nas, Missy Elliott, EPMD and Prodigy & Alchemist all receiving alternate covers back in October. In September meanwhile, Pusha T, Logic, Tech N9ne, De La Soul and Cypress Hill were honored with variants. Most recently, Future, Consequence, Masta Ace, Blackalicious and Czarface got the comic book rendering.
These new variants come courtesy of Jenny Frison, Keron Grant and Tim Bradstreet who designed the covers in the order they appear above and below. The connection between the Marvel world and the hip-hop world continues to deepen with each variant release. What’s more, Netflix’s series Luke Cage used a Gang Starr song to title each episode in its first season, with Adrian Younge and A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad scoring the series. The Method Man popped up in the show, rapping about Cage is perhaps less surprising and more of what’s to be expected from Marvel.
