After the overwhelming success of HBO's mini-series, The Night Of, it appears that Spike wants to recapture that same magic with its own show. Jay Z and the Weinstein Co. will team up with Spike to tackle the flaws within the criminal system in their new series titled,Time: The Kalief Browder Story.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will be about 16-year-old Kalief Browder, a young African American who was imprisoned for three years on Rikers Island without ever being convicted. The Bronx teen was arrested for allegedly stealing a backpack, but yet, never was convicted. To make matters worse, he spent two of his three years in solitary confinement. The case never went to the trial, and the charges were eventually dropped. Even after being released, freedom couldn't save the young man, as he later took his own life.

"Kalief Browder is a modern-day prophet; his story a failure of the judicial process,” Jay Z said. “A young man, and I emphasize young man, who lost his life because of a broken system. His tragedy has brought atrocities to light and now we must confront the issues and events that occurred so other young men can have a chance at justice."

The series will air next January and will feature first person accounts, interviews with family members, friends, and politicians involved with the case, and archival footage. Jenner Furst will direct the series through his Brooklyn-based company The Cinemart. Besides Jay Z, Harvey Weinstein, David Glassner, Furst, Nick Sandow, Julia Willoughby Nason as well as Michasel Gasparro, will serve as the show's executive producers.

"Jay Z, Kevin Kay, Sharon Levy and the entire team at Spike have been incredible partners on this project. What happened to Kalief is heartbreaking, but sadly, in reality, not the first of its kind," Weinsten co-chairman Harvey Weinstein said. "This series will take an important look at why Kalief's life was cut so short, the flaws in our justice system and hopefully will continue some powerful conversations and movements for some much needed reform."

Just last week, Jigga inked a major TV and movie deal with The Weinstein Co. It's good to see that they're already getting the ball rolling.
