On Monday (Jan. 8), the world of hip-hop, and really, just about anyone who's been keeping score of American history, collectively gasped when some perceived racist images from H&M's new campaign surfaced on the internet.

In this particular image, a young Black boy wears a hoodie with the words "Coolest monkey in the jungle" emblazoned across the front of it. If you know about racism in the U.S., you already know people often referred to African Americans to primates in order to dehumanize them. With that context in mind, The Weeknd, who had aligned himself with the brand in the past, has withdrawn himself from participating in any of their operations going forward.

"Woke up this morning shocked and embarrassed by this photo. I’m deeply offended and will not be working with @hm anymore," Abel wrote yesterday in a short tweet that included an image of the advertisement.

For their part, H&M, which has essentially made a blunder in the same vein as Pepsi's Kendall Jenner fiasco, quickly issued an apology.

"We understand that many people are upset about the image," begins the brand's apologetic statement. "We, who work at H&M, can only agree. We are deeply sorry that the picture was taken, and we also regret the actual print. Therefore, we have not only removed the image from our channels, but also the garment from our product offering globally. It is obvious that our routines have not been followed properly. This is without any doubt. We will thoroughly investigate why this happened to prevent this type of mistake from happening again."

H&M issued their apology, but plenty of rappers had already commented on the issue, including the likes of Diddy, Pusha T, T.I., Plies and many more.
