Red Bull “Total Zero” is officially in most retail/gas station coolers around the Capital Region. The whole “zero” thing is getting pretty redundant – Coke, Dr. Pepper, Monster, etc. but Red Bull’s concept is a little different… because it’s NOT “Total Zero”. If you up yourself from the standard 8.4 OZ to a 12 OZ you’ll take in a few calories. Not a big deal.

The can is gray, boring, but slick. At first glance, you wouldn’t think there’d be much of a difference between the new guy and the original / sugar free offerings. Take one swig and you’ll notice a HUGE difference – taste.

I predominantly drink a sugar free Red Bull daily because I hate coffee and the original’s taste is a little too bitter for me. In my opinion, the sugar free tastes a little more carbonated and has a better flavor. Almost like a fizzy sweet tart or “smarties” candy. Although the sugar free tastes different than the original, the taste is similar enough that you can tell the ingredients are pretty consistent between the two.

The taste of “Total Zero” isn’t close to either. If you put a blank label on it, there’s no way you could identify it as an energy drink having anything to do with the Red Bull brand. The taste is quite tropical – with hints of pineapple, green apple and lemon lime. For those who don’t like fruity drinks, this isn’t for you.

Per 8.4 OZ can, the drink contains 0 calories, 0g fat, 60mg sodium (3% daily), 0g carbs, 0g sugars, less than 1g of protein and 80mg of caffeine – and for those wondering, a standard 7oz coffee has 80-150 mg of caffeine.

I’m not appalled by the new drink but I’m not going to make the switch from my sugar free. If you don’t drink Red Bull because you don’t like the flavor, the new Total Zero might be worth a try.
