Drake’s ‘If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late’ Earns No. 1 Spot
Drake is sitting at No. 1 once more. Hip-hop's golden boy sold an impressive 535,000 units of his latest release, If You're Reading This It's Too Late, placing him at the top spot on the Billboard 200.
The actual number of mixtapes -- check the liner notes -- sold is 495,000 during the first week, and the remaining numbers come from streaming.
Just like Beyonce, Drizzy dropped IYRTITL out of nowhere, with zero promotion or forewarning. There were also no physical copies released, so all sales come solely from digital downloads, which is extremely impressive. Drake has his loyal fan base to thank for that.
IYRTITL is the Toronto rapper's fourth No. 1. The first-week sales of the effort nearly match his previous releases. Thank Me Later sold 447,000, Take Care sold 631,000 and Nothing Was the Same earned the most at 658,000.
The Young Money artist also broke a Spotify record by having the most streams in the first week of an album release.
There are rumors swirling that Drake released this project to fulfill his contract with Cash Money Records. His next album, Views From the 6, will reportedly be released on his own label, OVO, according to Business Insider.
Up until this point, the 28-year-old has kept mum on the Lil Wayne and Cash Money conflict. Just like Nicki Minaj, he hasn't chosen a side publicly. That may change, however, if the rumors about him leaving Cash Money are true.
For now, Drizzy can just bask in the success of his latest release, while Wayne continues to hash it out with Birdman.
