Common, Chance the Rapper, Solange and More Celebrate Re-Routing of the Dakota Access Pipeline

After months of protesting and violence used against protesters by militarized police, the Army Corp of Engineers announced it will look for an alternate route for the Dakota Access Pipeline to cross under Lake Oahe in North Dakota, CNN reports.

The protest at Standing Rock has lasted for months, as members of the Sioux tribe and their supporters have camped out t the sight, voicing their disapproval of the pipeline that they said could damage the water supply of their nearby reservation.

Hip-hop joined in the celebration as well. Many artists, including Vic Mensa most recently, were vocal in their support of re-routing the pipeline. Vic was on hand at Standing Rock last week and posted lengthy Instagram messages about his support of the Sioux tribe and their fight to maintain clean water.

Alicia Keys, Lupe Fiasco, Chance the Rapper and Common were among the artists who celebrated the victory at Standing Rock with messages on social media.

“The people that defended Standing Rock are American Heroes. God bless you,” Lil Chano wrote. Meanwhile, Lupe Fiasco posted Fela Kuti’s classic, “Water No Get Enemy,” and labeled the song “Standing Rock vibes.”

However, grassroots activists, though excited about the current victory, have said everyone must remain diligent. Tribal leaders are worried that the decision to change directions may not be permanent, especially with the incoming Trump administration. Thus, they are prepared to keep fighting if need be.

Check out the celebratory response to the decision below.
