Bon Qui Qui’s Guide to Rapper Etiquette [EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW]

Don't mess with Bon Qui Qui. The former fast-food employee and Alexander Wang salesperson is officially a hip-hop artist and has released her debut album, Gold Plated Dreams, featuring the lead single, 'I'm a Cut You.'

Like many things in her life, Bon Qui Qui (the alter ego of comedian Anjelah Johnson-Reyes of MADtv fame) took her past setbacks and flipped them into opportunity. “I had got fired because they didn’t like my customer service," she tells The Boombox of her gig at King Burger. "It motivated me to pursue my real dream to be a rapper."

She funneled her anger on the job, as well as heartbreak over a failed relationship, into Gold Plated Dreams. "I just write music based on my life. Based on things that I deal with," she explains. "I’m just like, y'all’s homegirl. I deal with the same stuff that y’all deal with, you know. I wrote some songs about just like... There’s this one song called, 'Bye.' If you ever had somebody say something so dumb, so stupid to you, you don’t even have the energy to entertain a response to them. You say, 'Bye!' I have nothing to say to you. Just, bye. Anybody trying to hate on you. A dude trying to cheat on you. Need to go. Need to go."

She's the new kid in town but Bon Qui Qui says that other rappers have given her love. In particular, A$AP Rocky, who she helped out at Alexander Wang's store, is a fan. "He was like, 'Yo! You have to let me direct your next music video,'" she remembers. "We haven’t proceeded on anything since then, but he was real kind to me… A$AP Rocky had come through there. He was like, 'I love your music. Let me direct your next music video.' Hopefully he reads this. Hey, A$AP Rocky! You said you was gonna direct my next music video. What’s up?”

While she waits on Rocky to return her shout-out and preps for the release of her ", the California native shares her thoughts on rapper's social norms and accepted behaviors.
